Most Interesting Man in the World
Have you seen the most interesting man in the world who does TV ads for that Spanish sounding beer? The one who when he sits down to watch TV, the TV watches him? His copywriters have gone all out to convince us he really is the most interesting man in the world. His name is Jonathan Goldsmith. While doing the beer commercial the narrator sophisticatedly announces “He once had an awkward moment, just to see how it feels.” Or “The police often question him, just because they find him interesting.”
Well, Goldsmith is not this man. In fact, he’s a fraud. I’m the most interesting man in the world. My mother told me so. And when I’m not advising God on the order of things or leading world leaders on the international state of affairs, I write for HubPages. It’s only fair I should share my expertise with those less fortunate. Obviously, these statements are meant to get a laugh.
But seriously, in reality, Goldsmith is quite an interesting man and has done some amazing things. He once rescued a stranded climber on Mt. Whitney, saved a drowning girl in Malibu, CA, sailed the high seas, ran his own network marketing business, lived in the Sierras and also aboard his sailboat in Marina del Rey.
However, not all of his life has been glamorous and exciting. Before becoming an actor he worked in several different occupations. He drove a garbage truck and did construction work. Later, in the 1990s, he started a network selling waterless-car-wash products, which became successful enough to allow him to retire from acting. In his spare time Goldsmith reads the old philosophers and loves to cut wood.
The 72 year old, most interesting man in the world, it turns out, is a Jewish guy from the Bronx. He was born on September 26, 1938. His mother was a model, working for the Conover modeling agency established in New York in 1939. His father was a high school track coach.
Goldsmith also attended acting classes and eventually began a career as an actor who mostly played parts as the guy who gets killed off, on many popular TV shows such as MacGyver,” “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “T. J. Hooker” and “Magnum, P.I.,” to name just a few. In all, he made guest appearances on about 45 television series. However, he first became established in Western movies appearing in around 25. In one 1976 movie called The Shootist, starring John Wayne, he played a villain who was shot between the eyes by Wayne.
Before his acting career took off and landing his present role, he could go practically anywhere without being recognized. Today, he says he can hardly go anywhere without someone asking, “Aren’t you the guy…?”
And he once went to a New York Boat Show in search of a sailboat. While there he also stopped at a Ducks Unlimited booth where the attendant asked, “Aren’t you the Most Interesting Man in the World?” Then the two struck up a conversation about dogs. It seems Goldsmith was looking for a certain breed. It also just happened, the attendant knew someone who had the particular breed in question and immediately called him. Of course, the most interesting man in the world….goes to a boat show and buys a dog.
