The Exorcism of Carlita Villaneuva
When it comes to the paranormal, occult and cases of demon possession there are three groups of people…believers, skeptics and those that simply don’t know. However, there have been documented cases of demon possession observed by credible witnesses. Although it is a rare phenomenon, it happens more often than people realize.
Take the case of Clarita Villaneuva, a 17 year old Philippine girl in Manila. Her father had either deserted the family or was dead. In either case Clarita did not remember him. Her mother practiced fortune telling and spiritism. Although she didn’t believe in any of it, it was a way to make money. The girl was raised watching her mother holding séances, communicating with the dead and predicting the future for clients.
But, at the age of 12 Clarita’s mother died leaving her to wander the streets and fend for herself. Shortly after local prostitutes took her in and taught her how to make a living. When she was a few years older she moved to manila where her business would be better.
Artist Sketch of Smaller Entity
In the early morning of May 10th, 1951 she made the mistake of soliciting an undercover police officer. Clarita was arrested and taken to the over 300 year old Bilibid Prison which was being used as the city jail. Several days following her incarceration, Clarita began screaming she was being attacked and bitten. When the jailer arrived, he saw welts and 8 sets of teeth marks on her arms, legs and neck. The policeman concluded the prisoner may have been able to inflict the injuries to her arms, but there was no way she could’ve bitten the back of her neck or legs.
Clarita began screaming again and hysterically claiming “the thing” was coming. The perplexed officer unlocked the cell and led her into the hall. He watched in horror as some unseen entity inflicted more teeth marks on her upper arm and shoulders…complete with saliva. The frightened officer ran to inform his superiors.
Soon afterwards medics and the chief of police arrived. The wounded girl was escorted to the prison clinic for treatment. The doctors were astounded and said they had never seen anything like it before. When they asked Clarita to describe what had happened she said it resembled a man wearing a loose black cape, only with large bulging eyes and was floating in the air.
The next morning, Clarita was taken to court to face charges when once again she screamed “the thing” was back and biting her again. Two strong policemen seized her while reporters, police and the medical examiner watched in disbelief as teeth marks sank deep into her arms, hands, and neck. This assault lasted about five minutes at which time Clarita fainted. The medical officer examined Clarita and announced "These bites are genuine. And they are not self inflicted!" The mayor was immediately summoned.
By the time Clarita regained consciousness the mayor had arrived. The bites on her arms and hands were severely swollen and bruised. As the Mayor and medical examiner accompanied her back to the prison clinic, Clarita shrieked “the thing” was back, but this time accompanied by another smaller bug-eyed creature. The mayor later testified teeth marks appeared on both sides of her throat, index finger and hand…while he held it!
Clarita later described the larger of the two entities as being black and hairy with fangs and a set of buck-teeth. The doctors verified her description by the teeth marks. The smaller one was described as dwarflike.
One sceptical doctor accused her of putting on an act for sympathy. Clarita solemnly stared and stoically stated “You will die.” The following day, for no obvious reasons, he did. Rumors spread like wildfire she was a witch who could cast spells and place curses.
The chief jailer had also had a confrontation with the girl, kicking her for something she had done wrong. Clarita glared coldly at him and once again said: ‘You will die!’ Within four days, he too was dead.
The biting had now become a daily occurrence. At a loss to explain the phenomenon, the prison physician, sought help. Doctors and other professionals from various countries came to offer their assistance. It wasn’t long before the news media were sending reporters to investigate and the story was soon heralded in front page news around the globe.
In desperation the archbishop was contacted who dispatched a noted exorcist and theologian. Clarita was brought before a large group of reporters, professors and doctors. As she was led into the room, she singled out the exorcist and screamed: “I hate you!” He replied “I know you hate me. I have come to cast you out.”
That was the beginning of a long drawn out three day battle with the girl screaming, hurling obscenities and blaspheming the entire time. Finally, she became calm and declared “He’s gone.”
Strangely, once back in the hospital, the attacks ceased. She was released six weeks later. Clarita still has the bite marks testifying to one of the strangest, unexplained occurrences in history.
